The Manithaneya Makkal Katchi's (MMK) tie-up with the AIADMK will continue for the local body elections, according to M.H. Jawahirullah, its convener and newly elected MLA.
Stating that the MMK's relationship with the AIADMK was strong, he claimed that the AIADMK-led alliance would sweep the local body elections.
The MMK, political wing of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, was part of the AIADMK-led alliance in the Assembly elections and bagged two of the three seats it contested.
Addressing reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Jawahirullah appreciated the move of the new AIADMK government to set up a separate department to ensure that the poll promises made by the party are implemented.
The MMK also welcomed the new government's decision to increase assistance for the fisherfolk from Rs.1,000 to Rs.2,000 during the 45-day ban on fishing.
In the wake of continued attacks on fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, the government should constitute a fishermen protection force as promised in the election manifesto at the earliest.
He urged the government to constitute a body to look into separate reservation for Muslims and take steps to retrieve Wakf Board properties that have been encroached upon. Replying to a query, Mr. Jawahirullah said that the MMK abstained from the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet as it was uncomfortable with the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
